Doors act as a fixed barrier, a means of preventing access into our homes, and hiding away our personal possessions. But, if doors serve as a barrier, than why feel the need to garnish them with decorative knockers, matts, and signs? For, doors do not act solely as an obstruction between spaces, but as physical projections of the “homey” ideals we wish to communicate to others. However, The ideals that we seek to convey to others rarely serve as an accurate reflection of the realities that lie behind closed doors. To illustrate this idea I have contrasted my bedroom door, tattered and damaged beyond repair, with my front door. This comparison calls into question the illusive nature of these barriers and the non-verbal messages they inevitably represent.
